Is Redmond Clay considered food grade?

Clay isn't typically defined as food (even though it's used as an additive in some foods). So, classifying it as food-grade doesn’t really make sense. But we can say that if clay were to be used as food, Redmond Clay could certainly meet that classification.

REDMOND CLAY FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS BENTONITE CLAY?

Redmond Clay is made from pure bentonite clay we mine ourselves in Redmond, Utah. This mineral-rich clay is actually volcanic ash that was deposited in sea water millions of years ago. It comes from one of the most unique clay deposits discovered so far—rich in both calcium and sodium. The unique composition is one reason Redmond Clay works so well in so many ways. Bentonite clay in general (and Redmond Clay specifically) has remarkable benefits for your skin. Research shows, for example, that bentonite clay can absorb sebum, the oily substance on your skin that contributes to clogged pores and acne. Bentonite clay has also been shown to promote skin health, balance your skin's microbiome, and soothe skin irritations.

CAN I TAKE REDMOND CLAY INTERNALLY?

Clay has been used internally for thousands of years, and for decades, we've heard from customers who've had amazing experiences using our clay internally. In the past we talked about using Redmond Clay internally on our labels and in our marketing. But we've shifted our focus to the external, cosmetic uses of clay, with a plan to revisit clay supplements for internal use in the future. That said, our clay is still the same clay we sold in the past. Nothing has changed besides the way we market it.

WHAT'S WITH THE PROPOSITION 65 WARNING LABELS?

You may have noticed warning panels on Redmond Clay and other products, like Earthpaste, that contain Redmond Clay. Our clay hasn’t changed since nature made it a long, long time ago. To learn more about prop 65 visit: ⚠️ WARNING: Cancer and Reproductive Harm - https://www.p65warnings.ca.gov/ Natural bentonite clay is the base of a lot of Redmond Life products (including Earthpaste). Since this clay is from the earth, it contains trace amounts of earth-based elements, including lead. Because of this, the state of California requires that we put a Prop 65 statement on the product that says it may not be appropriate for some women and children. When it comes to elements and the body, the FORM of the element is key. Studies show bentonite clay is structured in such a way that it is not absorbed by the body. According to an FDA funded study, "Apparently, very little, if any, bentonite is absorbed after oral administration and as much as 3 percent in the diet has no observable adverse effects on experimental animals . . . No adverse effects have been observed at dietary levels as high as 12 percent in experimental animals. The human therapeutic dose for diarrhea is about 250 to 1,000 mg per kg.” Evaluation of the Health Aspects of Bentonite and Clay (Kaolin) as Food Ingredients There are also studies showing that bentonite/montmorillonite clay has been found to "significantly reduce lead concentration of tissues in blood, brain, liver, bone, kidney and hair." For example, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18568297 is a full peer-reviewed study published by PubMed (United States National Library of Medicine Search Engine). We are not saying that clay or clay-based products are right for everyone, just that there are many peer-reviewed studies on the potential benefits of clay. We don't want anyone to use any of our products if they don't feel good about using them. Clays have been used by humans and animals since the beginning, and continue to be studied for a variety of human and animal uses.

ARE REDMOND CLAY FACIAL MUD AND CHARCOAL MASKS ORGANIC AND NON-GMO?

All of the ingredients in our Facial Mud and Charcoal Masks are simple, clean, real, and non-GMO. Although, they aren't certified organic. A lot of clean companies (ourselves included) choose not to get the USDA's official organic stamp of approval because it's expensive and comes with prohibitive rules that don't always make sense. Did you know, for example, that wild-harvested ingredients aren't allowed in certified organic products? We don't know about you, but we think wild-harvested ingredients fall squarely in the simple, clean, and real category. This is just one example of why organic certification may not work for some clean companies. But there are plenty more. Here's what we can guarantee about Redmond Clay Facial Mud, Charcoal Masks, and all Redmond Life products: We only use ingredients that are real, from the earth, and non-GMO. We know how important this guarantee is to you and your family because it's just as important to us and ours.

WHAT ARE THE SKIN BENEFITS OF CHARCOAL?

Charcoal has detoxifying and antimicrobial properties that support healthy skin. Activated charcoal is getting more and more popular in skincare products these days, and there's a good reason for that. Research shows that activated charcoal can draw toxins and bacteria from your body. And some experts think it can do the same thing for your skin. The theory is, that activated charcoal's potent drawing powers pull dirt, chemicals, bacteria, and other toxins to the skin's surface, so they can be removed more easily. Charcoal also has antimicrobial properties that can offer protection against harmful microbes on the skin, particularly in wounds. This antimicrobial power could potentially help with conditions like acne as well. The texture of activated charcoal also provides a light exfoliating effect. And regular exfoliation can unclog pores, increase circulation, and even increase the production of collagen (among other awesome benefits).

Super fine on so many levels!

I purchased the Redmond Clay to be used in a facial cleanser & mask recipe. It is so fine and light that it blends perfectly with the other ingredients. My family also learned with me that a little bit goes a long way when they (boys) got to enjoy facials as well with the excess of my first experiment! I may have inadvertently created monsters.
